YLlavendarMintShampoo

After nearly finishing my first bottle of Young Living Essential Oils’ Lavender Mint Daily Shampoo I am officially ready to share my review about it.

IMPRESSIONS

This one product for me was a roller coaster of impressions…. from love at first smell to …. my hair HATES this product…. to I love this smell so much and how it feels that I want to use it still – jut not on my hair.

Everyone is different, but for me, I could not get this shampoo to work with my hair.  It honestly felt that my hair was covered in waxy thick oil after shampooing – any my hair felt light, dry and clean before getting into the shower !  I tried washing multiple times in a row. I tried washing only once. I tried avoiding all other products for a week. I tried morning VS night. It was so bad I had to wash my hair multiple times in a row with another non-healthy shampoo product to get my hair to not stick heavily to my head and get it soft and silky again.

I wasn’t happy and didn’t want to waste my money. I almost called up Young Living to return it. However, I was so in love with it’s AMAZING aroma of lavender and mint… and how good it felt to use in the shower that I started using it as a body wash. I LOVE IT as a body wash. So much in fact, I’ll actually buy this product again!!  I have heard that other people adore this as a shampoo – perhaps it depends on your hair and other biological factors.

A tiny bit on a washcloth or bath pouf goes a huge way. Great lather, lasts a long time, cleans excellently and best of all it’s invigorating on your skin and really wakes you up. That ‘oily-waxy’ feeling was not present on my skin like it was on my hair.

So what’s in the Lavender Mint Daily Shampoo?

Water, Decyl Glucoside, Coco Betaine, Lauryl Glucoside, Coco-Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Sorbitan Sesquicaprylate, Glycerin, Levulinic Acid, p-Anisic Acid, Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Lactic Acid, Inulin, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Phytate, Lycium Barbarum fruit extract, Potassium Sorbate, Panthenol, Silk Protein, Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) Leaf Extract, Equisetum Arvense Extract, Yucca Schidigera (Root) Extract, Hydrolyzed algin, Chlorella Vulgaris, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Fruit Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Undaria Pinnatifida Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Mentha Spicata (Spearmint) Leaf Oil

† Pure therapeutic-grade essential oil.

I also purchased the Young Living Copaiba Vanilla Conditioner as well and will write an honest review about my experience with that product.

WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN?

Yes for sure – as a body wash – not as shampoo.

  1. Update: I have ordered this again! Still love! They just changed the packaging to one of their simple bottles. Same volume. It’s fine… actually, it’s better because the old opening was fancy…. but probably not that efficient – less gooey maybe. Still very happy! 🙂

  2. I’m on week 3 of trying this and honestly having the same issues as you! I am sticking with it and making sure I am rinsing completely.
It is stripping the gunk in my head. I’ve noticed gross stuff in my hair brush and I’ve always had issues with dandruff. The first week my hair was super oily (never had this issue) then the next week it got better, just one spot in my head is still super oily. Today I started using my fingernails on my scalp realllly good and I think that helped his time with the oiliness. I did ask customer service and she told me to give it 2-3 weeks since it’s a big change from the commercial shampoos.

    • Thank you so much for writing in – I find this very fascinating!! It could be that it’s stripping old goo from scalp and hair! There is no way that I could have lasted the three weeks… I was going crazy by about day 4. 😉 If you can, write back after more time and let us know if you reached a balance where it’s working for you ok? Would love to know! Thanks again!

      • Hi Karen,

I’m on my 2nd bottle. It might sound crazy but I added Lavender, Rosemary, Melalucea, Cedarwood and Ylang Ylang EOs in the shampoo. 20 drops of each. Feels great on my scalp and less hairfall.

        Have a great day!

        • Wow!! Bet it smells amazing! Less hair falling out – always a bonus! 😀 Thanks for sharing!

  3. Is anyone else having an allergic reaction to the shampoo? little bumps on your skin and really really itchy!

    • oh dear! So sorry you’re having that kind of reaction Emily! :0

    • I’m using the copaiba vanilla, 2nd bottle.. my scalp itches a lot. I thought it was just me then my Husband who recently used the shampoo mentioned his scalp itched. I wonder if it’s dandruff. Wonder if the lavender mint has this itchy issue.. it’s sad if I’ve to switch to our brand shampoo.

      • Very interesting! I used the Copaiba Vanilla Conditioner and really liked it – didn’t try shampoo version. I wonder if it’s a drying issue?

  4. It could be a detox reaction; the shampoo striping away all the other stuff we have used for years and cleansing your scalp. I used a similar product and some of the “detox reactions” include itchy scalp, oily/greesy, and shedding.. but if you stick through the 4-6 weeks my hair felt amazing. I’m wondering if this Young Living Shampoo has the same detox process?

    • I have heard other sources say the same thing about detoxing….. stripping old ‘stuff’ from your hair etc. There’s no way I could have lasted 4-6 weeks with thick, heavy, waxy, greasy hair. I barely lasted 1 week. ;0 I succumbed and washed my hair about 5x with Head & Shoulders until it felt soft and clean again. 😉 It’s too bad, it smells heavenly!!

  5. Hello! I’ve been using the Lavender shampoo from YL for two months now and my head feels great! It hasn’t itched since the last time I used a sulfate free shampoo. Thing is, my hair looks stringy. Like a stringy oily. They say give it 2-3 weeks and I’ve more than doubled that. I’m not sure what to do!! I can even style my hair because using a curling iron on it intensifies the oily look! If I use a brush or a comb, my hair looks oil plastered to my head. Not sure what to do!!!

    • Hi Ella,

So glad to hear that your head isn’t itching anymore!! 😀 I just couldn’t live with permanently heavy feeling hair……. you have more sticking power than I did. What if you tried using a smaller amount? I suspect it wouldn’t help though. Maybe try to investigate other sulfate-free shampoos? Wishing you success!

  6. I know this is an older post but I am finishing my bottle this week! I hate it! I have tried everything to make it work, but it doesn’t! It leaves my hair sticky and oily feeling but really dry on the ends! Lots of breakage and for the first time in my life I have dandruff! I’ve been trying to deal with it now for about 4 months, because it cost a lot and I wanted to make sure I gave it a good chance, but it only got worse!! My hair had no movement and felt heavy. So far I have tried this (lavender mint) and prior copiaba. I also have tried to use the kids and it’s the best of them all, but still not wonderful! I have been told to try the lavender, but my hair was so beautiful and is now breaking and looks terrible, so I am not sure I want to give anything else a try!

    • Thank you for your comment – sorry you are having trouble with the shampoo….. I’m amazed you’ve lasted that long. I found it made a lovely body shampoo, the smell was too pretty to waste. 😉

    • I’ve been using it for almost a year. I even bought a second bottle and have patiently waited for this shampoo to stop making my scalp oily and ends dry. I love many Young Living products. I hate this shampoo!! I’m on the quest for a new nontoxic shampoo. Again, I’ve used it for about 8 months, and my hair is in horrible condition!!

    • I just started using it last week and am having the same problem. Sorry to hear how extreme it’s been for you. I wonder what could be causing that!

  7. It is detoxing your hair. Mine did the same thing, but only for 2-3 weeks. It was worse when I was actually washing and it seemed very sticky and stiff. I toughed it out and now I love it. My hair is soft and clean, and I know I’m not putting junk in my hair. If our hair acts like that when we start using it, imagine how bad our other shampoos were for our head. Don’t give up. Keep using and you will have cleaner hair and scalp!

    • That is great to hear! Thank you for sharing! 🙂

    • Hi, Julie! I really wish this were true for everyone, but I’ve used the Lavender Mint for months, and my hair is still waxy near the scalp, and horribly dry at the ends. I’m only posting this because I am so frustrated, and I wanted to let people know that this doesn’t work for everyone. I’ve been very dedicated to waiting it out. I’ve diluted the shampoo in various ratios, I’ve washed more, less, I’ve done everything any reviews about this shampoo have suggested, and I’ve still had no success.

  8. I’m new to young living and also purchased the shampoo. I did watch a video on diluting it. I think that’s a game changer. 1 bottle divided into 3. Adding 2/3 water to 1/3 shampoo and adding 1 tsp of baking soda for bubbles. Same idea for the conditioner minus the baking soda of course.

  9. I had a similar greasy reaction but then i found the DOUBLE wash… I have thick hair and found that if i soak my head with the water, put in a nickle sized amount on my scalp, work it through wash and then repeat rinsing throughly I don’t have that problem anymore… I feel like the first wash strips the junk out and the second finishes it off… now I love it… I have not tried the conditioner yet but I am excited to put it in the next order… but the double wash was key in making me fall for it….

  10. I am on the fence about buying. I actually have some lavender mint conditioner on ER because I want to make some fabric softener. Some ladies in my oily group say that they dilute their shampoo. They do like a third of the bottle and the rest distilled water! Has anyone above tried that method?

  11. Don’t really think this is a detox effect for some of us. I used the Kids Scents shampoo and loved it. It lathered great and left my hair feeling clean, not greasy. Then I decided to try the Lavender Mint shampoo. Right away my hair was limp and greasy. So it wasn’t detox since I had already been using the Kid Scents for 6 months or more. I looked at the ingredients on both bottles and the Lavender Mint has ingredients that are not in the Kid Scents, not including the oils. I just think it depends on your hair type. I am going back to Kid Scents. I will try the Lavender Mint as a body wash. That sounds great!

    • Thanks for sharing your experience! This is really interesting….. especially since you have already been ‘all natural’ before hand. Maybe it’s a hair type thing? I know I have super fine hair….. It does make a gorgeous body wash. ;D

  12. I’ve had the same negative results from the Lavender Mint shampoo, and I have used it for months. It’s a relief to know that I’m not the only person who is experiencing the waxy scalp and dry ends. I’ll try the Kid Scents line. I love so many of the Young Living products, so I’ve been determined to make the shampoo work. Guess I’ll just move on and chalk it up to my body chemistry!!

  13. So glad I read this. I’m having the waxy build up as well with very dry ends. I have been using it for several months. I tried diluting it, double washing, using my finger nails when washing, and using different amounts. Even my stylist made a comment about my dry ends. I hate this because I love the lavender mint smell and the tingle, but I literally get gunk under my nails when I scratch my head. I will try using it as a body wash, and now I’m going to google how to use the conditioner as a fabric softner LOL.

  14. Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I was wondering why YL lavender mint shampoo didn’t work for me… leaving my hair limp and oily too. After more than a month of using it, I decided to just go back to my old shampoo and my hair finally feels great again! I guess I’ll take up your suggestion to using it as a body wash!

  15. hi yeah I dont think its a detox thing either, Ive been using it for a month couldnt take it anymore so I went from using healthier shampoo with less chemicals still not purely organic and free of toxins but better and then using the conditioner on my hair and the conditioner is clumping right where I put it. It must be an absorption thing. Ive also tried other healthier shampoos and they work fine its whatever young living is using in the product thats causing this not the detox effect.

  16. I tried the copaiba shampoo and had a horrible reaction. I tried it for almost two months and my scalp was on fire. It has calmed down since I stopped using it but hasn’t gone away entirely. I do not believe it’s detox. I do think that everyone’s body chemistry is different and what works for one might not work for another. I did love the smell but I couldn’t put myself through any additional agony.

  17. Hey hun. I know this is an old post but I have been using it for a year and I just can’t get the way yuk feeling out of my hair. I only wash once or twice a week and use a diy diy shampoo between which soaks up the yuk.

  18. This is so helpful! I have also been using lavender mint for over a month and it seems to be a little less waxy but still waxy. I think I’ll try the double wash next time. I did do a “clarifying” wash with thieves household cleaner and some thieves dish soap and that seemed to help some but still not the same. I’m trying to be patient and give it a try. Glad I’m not going out of the house right now.

  19. I used Copaipa for over a year and hair washed well and even after the conditioner, but same issue as this original post with the Lavender Mint–and it’s August 2020! At first I thought maybe the conditioner was the culprit, so stopped it, but no, the greasy look continued. I finally used another brand of shampoo that cleaned my hair and didn’t leave the coating. I was suspicious it was the Lavender Mint Young Living shampoo causing the problem after getting great results after a hair cut and a salon product was used. Further, I really know now after using another brand of shampoo at home. I’ll have to use Lavender Mint as a body wash as suggested, and either go back to Copaiba shampoo, or use something else.
