review: KidScents Lotion

kidscentslotionKidScents Lotion is a safe, gentle, and mild lotion that is a great for sensitive skin.  It is marketed for children with it’s friendly zebra character on the label – but I chose it because some lotions irritate my skin and I want to get away from lotions that are full of sketchy chemicals.  This is one of many natural body lotions that Young Living offers.

What was in my favorite body lotion before?

lubridermLubriderm Daily Moisture Fragrance Free Lotion has been my body lotion of choice for since, forever. I used it because it works – is ‘gentle’ and non-irritating. Great reputation, dermatologist recommendation and marketing led me to think that this lotion is pure and safe.  Today, the ease of looking up what the words actually mean on our products labels shines the light on the reality of what we’re putting on our skin. It’s common knowledge that our skin is our largest organ and what we put on it… doesn’t simply sit on it or go a little bit ‘in’ … it goes into our bodies and can affect our health over a lifetime of use possibly.

The Skin Deep Database (www.ewg.org) gives Lubriderm a rating of 5 out of 10 on the ‘HAZARD/CONCERN RATING’ so not horrific – but certainly not good.

Reading about some of the ingredients and their effects doesn’t make me happy to cover my body with it everyday!

  • PROPYLPARABEN – Developmental/reproductive toxicity, Ecotoxicology, Endocrine disruption, Allergies/immunotoxicity, Miscellaneous, Use restrictions (10/10 of hazard rating by the way!)
  •  FRAGRANCE – Ecotoxicology, Allergies/immunotoxicity, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Miscellaneous, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive) (PS huh? I thought this was a FRAGRANCE FREE product I was buying)
  • CETEARETH-20 – Enhanced skin absorption, Contamination concerns (ETHYLENE OXIDE, 1,4-DIOXANE, ETHYLENE OXIDE, 1,4-DIOXANE), Use restrictions
  • ETHYLPARABEN –  Endocrine disruption, Allergies/immunotoxicity, Use restrictions
  • METHYLPARABEN  – Biochemical or cellular level changes, Endocrine disruption, Allergies/immunotoxicity, Use restrictions
  • PHENOXYETHANOL  – Allergies/immunotoxicity, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Occupational hazards, Use restrictions
  • DIMETHICONE – Ecotoxicology, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Use restrictions
  • SODIUM HYDROXIDE – Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Use restrictions

bottlekidscentsHealth benefits of using a natural product aside….. what do I think of KidScents Lotion?

FRAGRANCE: For some reason, I keep thinking ‘celery’ when I smell it. Very ‘green’ and herbal, grassy possibly.  Isn’t offensive, but isn’t yummy either. I think my kids would think it’s a toss up of either not noticing the smell – or thinking it’s icky. My kids’ skin is thankfully healthy and soft so other than sun protection they aren’t in a situation where they need a body lotion at the moment. Could certainly change though.

ABSORPTION: Excellent !  No residue, no greasiness…. just sinks in and GONE. Perfect.

lotionzoomTHICKNESS:  Is pretty thick!  Thicker than Lubriderm.  Is a great body lotion, might be too thick for faces, but I use it anyway because it absorbs so beautifully. Hate greasy sticky lingering lotion – and this is a beautiful performing lotion. White, glossy.

PRESENTATION/PACKAGING:  The zebra is cute. I feel like a kid using it – and he reminds me of our Ziggy the Zebra that we use with our pre-reading program (whom we all love when he comes out of the cupboard to play) !!  BUT …. almost too thick I think for the squeeze bottle it’s in. I wish they made it in a pump format. I hate shaking bottles upside down …. a waste of time. Yup, I’m impatient. The website says that it comes with a miniature animal. I wish it did…. but I never got one. The bottle and label are not fancy.  The label on my bottled wrinkled a bit and the white bottle is as plain as they come.  The price of the lotion is totally going towards its precious high quality ingredients – where I’d rather the money go toward anyway.

Would I buy it again?

There isn’t a reason not to buy it…. but I’m just curious if there are other lotions that might either be totally unscented or have a natural scent that I enjoy more.  I’m very happy with the consistency and it’s performance.  I’m excited to have fun with other Young Living lotions – there are many…. I very well might buy it again as it is a mild scent that doesn’t linger long anyway. I wouldn’t pay retail price for it – worth being a member to get the nice discount off all prices (24% off).
